Hugh Plumb’s signature. Acura's Type R was perhaps the most formidable force among World Challenge competitors of its day, soon performing at speeds of which only GT cars were accustomed to. As
In 1997, the ultimate Integra made its debut. The Integra Type R featured several upgrades over the GS-R. The Type R's chassis was stiffer, and Acura cut down the curb weight by 33 pounds.
Renowned for its exceptional handling and high-revving B-series engine, it set the bar so high that even the 2024 Acura Integra Type S is continually compared to its nearly 30-year-old forebear.
'91 Integra GS - 1.8L - 130hp - ~2600lbs - 0-60 9.1sec 30 years of Honda small displacement engine improvement in a nutshell. Notable - a Type R Civic today could easily (on paper) romp a '91 NSX @ 270hp / 5.9 0-60. edit - not dogging on the Integra at all, they just weren't fast, even then (GS-R was a tad quicker iirc)
The North American version retained the same 4.4 final drive throughout the Type-R's production run, unlike the Japanese version, which in 1998 changed to a 4.785 final drive along with revised gearing. Unlike the other model Integras with a open differential, The Type R came with a torque-sensing limited slip type.
Bear in mind, production for the 2018 Honda Civic Type-R is expected to average 400 cars for the US market per month and should finish the year around 6,000 units in total. In all five years of production, only 3,823 Acura Integra Type-R cars were built for the US market. Nearly that many Civic Type-R cars were produced in 2017 alone.
